Using AR to give smartphone photos & videos meaning

Writer: Gonzalo MoralesGonzalo Morales

Here's a sneak peek at a project I have been working on lately. There's a widespread feeling in this era of smartphone photography that our photos and videos mean less as we take more and more each year. It's hard to keep track of the significant moments in our lives as they get lost in thousands of other pictures in our media libraries.

To tackle this problem, our photo gallery apps have been updated with increasingly intelligent smart-curation features for our most important memories. While helpful, I believe only we can give true meaning to the moments we capture as we reflect on them afterward. This active exercise of journaling, which requires a little effort on our part, can create a much more satisfying viewing experience as we relive these moments—in ways no AI-smart-curation can achieve.

However, there are still ways to make the exercise of journaling and creating photo albums more effortless (and even more meaningful!) by leveraging the power of Augmented Reality. In the past, if we wanted to create a photo album or a travel log with pictures, we had to either visit a photo printing shop to print these pictures separately or use digital printing services and wait for them to be produced and delivered. This process, while nostalgic, is no longer practical for the pace of modern life.

With Augmented Diary, users can dynamically log new entries as they would in a regular diary, and simultaneously load visual content that can be unveiled using their smartphones. What's more, this isn’t limited to photos but also includes videos!

Here's how it works:

  1. Capture your moments: Use your iPhone to take photos and videos, just as you normally would.

  2. Reflect through writing: Handwrite analog diary entries on the pages of your Augmented Diary.

  3. Anchor visual memories with AR: Add captions and attach your media to your journal entries. Through augmented reality, your memories come to life in a Polaroid-like format when viewed with your smartphone camera.

  4. Relive with a twist:  Simply open your iPhone camera, scan the AR marker on any journal page, and instantly access the Augmented Diary experience to revisit the photos and videos connected to that entry.

Excited to get started with this interactive form of journaling? I am currently building a website where you will be able to learn more about this product and test it for yourself and I will update this post once this is ready. Stay tuned!
